The zig-zag structure of the spine suggests steps or a rising path, referencing interpretations that the “ladder” in the text may describe stairs or a slope.Jacob appears sleeping at the base of the structure, while the continuation of the divine message sits at the top, forming a vertical reading of the scene. The angels are illustrated with rough, gestural brushstrokes that remain close to abstraction, giving them a dreamlike quality and keeping the imagery slightly unclear, much like the atmosphere of the story itself.
